Happy New Year!

Happy New Year friends! I truly hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season. Mine was full of good food, good time with family and friends, and lots of heartwarming gratitude! And once all of that was out-of-the-way, in a moment of reflection, I asked myself what a new year truly means to me. The new year is more than a change on the calendar, it’s an invitation. And invitation to pause, to breathe deeply, and to gently ask ourselves how we want to feel as we move forward. And in yoga, we don’t rush to change. We arrive with awareness, compassion, and presence—and that’s exactly how we can step into this new year and all of the other ones moving forward.

Letting Go of what No Longer Serves You

This is such an important practice in my life. So important that it was our theme for our yoga practice at the beginning of this year! I have noticed when I carry around energy – in the form of thoughts and ideas and mental processes – that no longer serve me, it literally physically, and mentally weighs me down. The turning of the year, offers a natural moment to release all patterns, habits, or expectations that feel heavy. Just as we exhale to create space for a new inhale, we can soften our grip on what no longer supports our well-being.

Set intentions, Not Pressure

Instead of rigid resolutions, Yoga invites us to set intentions – gentle guiding principles that reflect how we want to live And feel.

Your intention might be:

  • More ease in your body

  • More calm in your mind

  • More kindness towards yourself

  • More consistency in your practices.

There is no “right“ intention. The most powerful ones come from listening inward. Also the word “practices“ can be a loaded word! This does not just mean for time on your yoga mat. For I believe most all of life is a practice, and having more consistency in ALL of our practices can be transformational! Perhaps you choose a specific practice on specific days. The sky is the limit!

Something that I have learned from setting these intentions, is that I will show up with a different urgency on different days. Learning to accept that there are some days where I simply will not be able to put much of any focus on my intention, has been a pivotal realization for me. And the second part of this is being OK with that! Keeping my focus here, some days means, baby steps, and one foot in front of the other.

Commit to Showing Up-As You Are

If your intention this year is simply to make more time to get onto your yoga mat, just remember, you don’t need to be more, flexible, stronger, or more experienced to actually practice yoga. You simply need to show up – imperfect, human, and present. This year, may your yoga mat be a place where you breathe without rushing, move without comparison, and rest without guilt. Every practice counts, no matter how it looks!

I truly hope that this new year Brings you all that your heart desires! And I hope some of these suggestions, will be helpful to you, in moving forward! Enjoy and Namaste! 🙏
